Theoretical urban proposal completed June 2004

Located at the border between a decaying area of Walsall and the neighbouring M6 flyover, the proposal seeks to create a mechanism for the permanent and transient populations of Walsall to communicate. A kilometre-long wall of hydroponic allotments is proposed to act as both an environmental filter, using exhaust fumes as plant food, and as a platform for dialogue between locals and commuters. The wall of allotments, tended to by Walsall’s inhabitants, is broken intermittently by parasitic structures which serve as boarding points for the allotment sheds. Each structure has a programme: The first is designed as a music centre, wrapping underneath the flyover to form a stage for performances in the sheltered soniscape.
